Cleaning & Polishing

What sets KTD's cleaning process apart from other jewelry stores' is the thorough inspection included in every complimentary cleaning. Our team of gemologists and master jewelers are on-site in our San Francisco showroom, and they'll carefully inspect your items so we can alert you to any damage or problem spots -- such as a loose gemstone or bent prongs -- before the piece is irreparable or gemstones fall out. If the jewelry is tarnished or faded, we may recommend a polishing as well.
If cleaning and inspecting your jewelry every six months sounds like a lot, remember that you wear many of your pieces every day. You drive your car every day, and that needs regular maintenance to keep running smoothly. Your jewelry will also benefit from having a regular tune-up. And if you care for it properly, your jewelry will last much longer than the car will!

Repairs & Resizing
No matter how careful we are, accidents sometimes happen. Normal wear and tear also takes its toll over time, particularly with beloved pieces we wear regularly or every day. Whether it's a broken clasp, a bent prong, a worn-down shank, some missing gemstones, or any other type of damage, KTD's in-store jewelers, with more than 60 years of combined experience, can repair the piece so it's like new again. KTD can also take care of resizing or other adjustments to make a piece more comfortable to wear, often while you wait. And of course, we'll be happy to put new batteries in your watches as well.Call us at 415.875.9438 to set up a complimentary repair consultation, or stop by if you're in the neighborhood.
Custom Orders & Transformations

Perhaps you have an older piece of jewelry that feels out of date, or a gift that never really wowed you. KTD can reclaim the gemstones and metals and transform them into something you love. Are you wondering what to do with a piece you inherited, full of sentimental value but little wearability? We can design a new piece around it, enhancing it without altering, so you'll love wearing both together. No matter the piece, the possibilities for transformation and reinvention are endless.
We welcome the chance to collaborate with you on your ideas, and create a refreshed or brand-new design that's perfectly tailored to your tastes. No custom project is too big or too small. Call us at 415.875.9438 to schedule a complimentary consultation.
Caring for Your Jewelry
To keep your jewelry in pristine condition, always remove it before bathing, swimming, gardening, doing household chores, or using chemical cleaners. Rings can be especially damaged by wearing gloves of any material (gloves can pull the prongs and loosen the gemstones) and by tucking sheets under a bed. Most jewelry can be gently cleaned with a lint-free cloth, or with warm water and a drop of liquid dish soap, but be sure to use a rubber mat or stop the sink drain beforehand. If your jewelry snags on your clothing, gently loosen it instead of yanking it free. Store your jewelry in padded jewelry boxes, or even in individual plastic zipper bags, to prevent scratches or other damage when you're not wearing it. When you travel, pack your jewelry in a small, padded case with hard sides so it isn't inadvertently crushed.Delicate items such as pearls and opals require moisture from the air, so storing them in a dry environment like a safe deposit box can cause more harm than good. An unused makeup brush is good for lightly cleaning opals and pearls. Lay damp pearls on a towel to air dry.
And of course, bring your jewelry to us every six months -- even if you didn't buy it here -- for a professional cleaning and inspection while you wait. Because we believe every piece of jewelry should sparkle to its fullest, cleaning and inspection at KTD is always free. If you have any questions on how to clean or care for your jewelry, or to schedule an appointment for a complimentary cleaning and inspection, don't hesitate to call us at 415.875.9438.
