Autumn brings many great things – cooler weather, beautiful foliage, holiday fun with friends and family – but our favorite might be opal’s month-long reign as October’s birthstone.

Because of its unparalleled beauty, opal has been cherished for millennia. Ancient Greeks thought it protected them from disease, and Arabian legend held that opals streaked from the heavens on lightning. Some ancient peoples believed it preserved life and even kept blonde hair blonde. Because it can display all the colors of the rainbow, opal has often been considered the luckiest gemstone known to man.

Whether the fiery red Mexican variety, a magical milky white, or any other hue, opals mesmerize with their play of light and color. They have a relatively low density, making even larger opals comfortable to wear, and because of their unique chemical composition, no two opals are exactly alike.
